Demetri Moularas Obituary

NORTH ANDOVER – “Easter is a day that marks the death of death. Death died when Christ rose from the grave. Jesus said, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.” (John 11:25-26).

On May 2, 2021, on Orthodox Easter, the holiest of days, God chose to take Demetri V. Moularas, 89, of North Andover (previously of Haverhill, MA and East Hampstead, NH) home where he could rest in peace. He was surrounded by his loving family who cherished him dearly.

Demetri was born in the northwest village of Palaiohori, Syrakkou – Greece. He was the son of the late Vasilios Moularas and Efthalia (Papathanasiou) Moularas. He started his journey to America at the age of 19, boarding the ship Aphrodite, for a thirteen day voyage. He happily landed on the shores of New Jersey on October 1, 1951. There his uncle waited for him. With no luggage and just the clothes on his back, he emigrated to Haverhill, MA where he settled. His first goal was to save enough money to buy a suit and a watch which he successfully did. He proudly wore that watch every day.

Demetri worked in the shoe manufacturing business when he arrived in America, first at Lincoln Shoes from 1951 to 1958 and 5th Avenue Shoes in 1958 where he applied soles and cut leather.  He later went to night school in Lawrence to become a hairdresser. He worked in Boston and Peabody in his new profession, however, did not like it and returned to the shoe shops.

In 1959, Demetri returned home to Greece. There he met, got engaged and married his beautiful wife Stavroula, all in two weeks. They were blessed to be happily married for 61 years and had 2 daughters, Eleni Moularas and Christina (Moularas) Lemonias, who adored him.

They both returned to Haverhill on November 13, 1959.  Demetri eventually started working at Western Electric (later AT&T) in 1964, performing various jobs. He worked there until his retirement in 1992. In 1983, he and his wife opened Ellas Pizza in Plaistow, NH. He worked endless hours there helping her after putting in a full day of work.

Demetri was an active member of Holy Apostles Sts. Peter and Paul Greek Orthodox Church.  In his early years he sang in the church choir and was an active GOYA member. He and his wife were devoted to their faith and participated in countless church activities.

Demetri was the kindest, sweetest and most gentle person who cherished his family. Demetri always kept his favorite blue chair in his car in preparation for attending all his grandchildren’s sporting/dance events. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed watching football with his adored son-in-law, Peter.

Demetri leaves behind his wife Stavroula (Keriazis) Moularas, his daughters Eleni Moularas and Christina Lemonias and her husband Peter Lemonias; his six grandchildren, Demetri Lemonias and his fiancé Nicole Madden, Alexander Lemonias, Christos Lemonias, Arianna Lemonias, Alexia Bittarelli and Christianna Bittarelli. He also leaves several nieces and nephews. Demetri was predeceased by his parents, his brother Kostas Dendrinos, his sister Anna Rokas and his son in-law Christian Bittarelli.

The family would like to thank Leigh Martinez and Ymanee Lopez who were Demetri’s primary loving caregivers for the past three years. They made it possible to keep him home with his family all these years. We could not have done it without them. Thank you!
