Delia Hernandez Obituary

HAVERHILL - Delia Iris Hernandez passed away serenely at Holy Family Hospital in Methuen, Massachusetts on May 7, 2020 at the tender age of 60.  Delia is survived by her loving husband Leonardo Hernandez, Sr., her beloved children Jenetsy and David Simone and her son Leonardo Hernandez, Jr., her mother Martha Merced, and her brothers Noberto Merced, Sr., Eduardo Merced, Sr. and Pedro Merced, Jr, her sister Nora Merced and her grandson Jayden LeBlanc and many nieces, nephews and cousins whom she adored and cherished. She was born in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, and at 9 years old she and her family moved to Haverhill, MA where she lived her remaining days surrounded by people who adored her.  She was lucky enough to marry her high school sweetheart.  Their love story was true all the way until the very end where Leonardo would spend every waking moment by his wife’s side as her needs for help grew.

She worked at Penacook Place for over twenty years as a Certified Nurse’s Aid/Activity Assistant.  Her coworkers and residents found her to be an absolute joy to be around.  She was able to lift the spirits of all those around her with an easy smile or a quirky joke.

Her love for people spilled over into every single thing that she did.  She was known for her extremely kind heart, her warm spirit, and her formidable strength.  One of the most amazing traits of Delia was her ability to always put others before herself… not just family… not only close friends but anyone in need.  Many of her friends credited her as being their very first friend when they first moved to Massachusetts, and she has on numerous occasions opened her doors to strangers to lend a hand, or her very last dollar to help others in need.

She made certain her children never wanted for anything.  She would spend her Saturday mornings dancing and singing to her favorite salsa and freestyle music while cleaning and cooking.  She was so full of energy and her family found that infectious.  What would people who knew Delia say about her?  She was always cracking jokes and making people laugh.  She loved her yard sales, and spending quality time with her children, and doting on her husband.  She was always willing to try new things.

She has been reunited in Heaven with her daughter, Jenevy Hernandez, and her loving father, Pedro Merced, Sr.  To every person that has the blessing of knowing this woman she will be sadly missed.

Services were privately held. She was laid to rest in St. James Cemetery, Haverhill.
