WINDHAM, NH - Anne M. Downing of Windham, NH and Naples, FL and formerly of Groveland, MA, died on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. She was predeceased by her beloved husband Leo F. Downing. Loving mother of Linda Mullin and her husband Robert of Duxbury; Michael Downing and his wife Jacqueline of Barnstead, NH; Anne Helmstetter and her husband Christopher of Langhorne, PA and Laura Downing and her husband Gerald of Boston. She was predeceased by her son J. Brian Downing. Devoted grandmother of six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Born and raised in Jamaica Plain to Michael and Agnes (Dohey) Miller of Fogo Island, Newfoundland, Anne was the 9th of 9 children. Her parents and siblings Edward, Alonzo and Joseph Miller, Frances Williamson, Patricia Bopp, Mary Barry and Rita Coyle and Bernadette Aylward all predeceased Anne.
Anne graduated from Holy Trinity in Roxbury and began her journey as teacher at Boston Teachers' College graduating in 1955. Anne was forever a teacher who spent the majority of her 30 year career teaching special education at Newbury Elementary. Upon retirement, she enjoyed travelling the world with her beloved husband Leo. She volunteered her time with the intellectually disabled, the Heart Association, Library, Hospice and numerous other community committees. Anne always had time for her children, friends and families that graced her kitchen. She brightened every event with her witty sense of humor and amazing, abundant feasts.
Funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Saturday, March 6 in Our Lady of Perpetual Help Basilica, 1545 Tremont Street, Boston at 10:00 AM.
